Abstract
Brain-machine interfaces can help severely paralyzed individuals regain independence by mapping their brain signals onto an external device like a computerized typing program or robotic arm. Brain machine interfacing (BMI) research has been limited by both the number of command signals that can be recorded from a BMI user and the number of available study participants. This thesis explores several different solutions to these problems. The viability of using coincident action potentials as an additional command signal is examined using a novel method which allows for these coincidences to be measured in real-time and independently from neuronal firing rates. Next, a BMI system is developed for rats that allows for longer testing sessions by motivating the rat with electrical stimulation to its medial forebrain bundle. Finally, a computer simulation technique that mimics the brain’s behavior in a closed loop BMI task is developed to optimize a naïve decoder’s adaptation process.
