The purpose of this descriptive study using Roy’s adaptation model was to explore the sexual awareness, body image, and self-esteem in individuals who have ostomies. The sample consisted of 18 participants in two ostomy support groups from northwest Ohio. The variables studied included sexual awareness, body image, and self-esteem. Data were analyzed using three measurement tools, the Sexual Awareness Scale (Snell, 1991), the Grindler Body Attitudes Scale (Grindler-Katonah, 1991), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). Data revealed that there were no statistically significant findings but in this sample, men seemed to have greater perceptions of body image, self-esteem, and sexual awareness. Future studies should include larger samples, broader geographical locations or inpatient settings to gain more significant and sensitive findings. Findings from the study could be used by nurses to devise better care plans for individuals to better adapt to their ostomies.
