To be PC or not to be: The impact of political correctness pressures on implicit and explicit measures of prejudice

Levin, Olga A.

Abstract Details

2003, Master of Arts, Miami University, Psychology.
Prior research has debated the causes for the discrepancy found between the participants’ scores on the Implicit Association Test and explicit measures of prejudice. The present study undertook to account for that discrepancy via a popular yet previously uninvestigated construct of political correctness in conjunction with several measures of motivation to control prejudicial responses. The results of the study suggest that this discrepancy in implicit versus explicit scores is associated with professed internal motivations to respond without prejudice (e.g., personal values) and that negative perception of and attitude toward political correctness is partly responsible for such discrepant responses on the IAT and explicit measures of prejudice. The implications of the findings are discussed.
