We determined the dietary overlap between yellow perch (<95mm, 95-150mm, >150mm TL) and round goby (<60mm, 60-105mm, >105mm TL) size classes during summer 2002 using gut contents and stable isotope analysis. Both analyses indicated greater overlap between small and medium size classes later in the season. Perch diets showed higher seasonal variation than goby. Gut analysis indicated considerable overlap between small perch and gobies in August, and a moderate overlap between medium perch and gobies in August. Both species consumed amphipods, dipterans, zooplankton and eggs. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were similar between small perch and all gobies and medium perch and medium gobies in August, and between small perch and small gobies in June. Our results provide evidence for potential competitive interactions between perch and gobies. This may affect perch recruitment into larger size classes by reducing perch growth, leaving them vulnerable to predation for a longer time period.
