Abstract
Food quantity is one factor that affects growth in many spider species. Generally, increases in the amount of food an animal consumes result in larger adult body sizes, decreased maturation times, and fewer molts to maturity. Therefore, it was hypothesized that different feeding regimes would have similar effects on the growth of the wolf spider Hogna helluo (Araneae: Lycosidae). To examine the effects of food quantity, fifty early instar Hogna were separated from the first clutch of two mothers, and initial measurements of weight and carapace width were taken. Twenty-five spiders from each mother were placed on one of two feeding regimes that differed in the frequency with which they were fed. For the duration of the experiment, dates of molting events were recorded. Upon maturation, final body size measurements were taken; and maturation time, number of instars to maturity, and time spent in the penultimate instar were calculated. Hogna were larger, heavier, and underwent fewer molts to maturity when reared on a high quantity diet. However, differences in survival, maturation time, and time spent in the penultimate instar were not detected.
