CHANGING DIVERSITY IN THE COMPOSITION CLASSROOM

The purpose of this study is to take a look at students with Learning Disabilities (LDs) a.k.a. special learners and how they need to be incorporated into the diversity focus of the composition classroom. I will look at how specialized students first appeared in college; how they were diagnosed prior to college; the inconsistencies in diagnosis and maintaining Individual Education Programs (IEPs) set up for specialized students while in elementary and secondary schools; the lack of training, discussion, scholarly work, and textbooks for graduate students about specialized students; and what can be done differently to include LD students as members of diverse students. In order to achieve this goal, it is important to look at the characteristics of the special learner. I will do this by discussing the individual as a special learner and then identify the special needs that matter in order for the special learner to better succeed in the composition classroom. I will also discuss pedagogical techniques for the composition teacher to use. Therefore in order to achieve these goals, this study will begin by divulging my own personal narrative. I then use simulated students with LDs to use as sample students entering the composition classroom and explain how they fare through the composition eras. Finally, I will discuss what needs to be done in the discipline, institutions, and government to include LD students in the composition classroom.
