PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a community-based pediatric weight management program in at-risk for overweight children. METHODS: 21 boys (10.4 ± 1.0 yrs) (mean ± SD) and 24 girls (10.1 ± 1.2 yrs) with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 85th percentile for age and gender participated in a 10-week intervention designed for 9 to 12 year olds. RESULTS: 17 boys and 21 girls (84%) completed the 10-week intervention. In response to the weight management program, both boys and girls experienced similarly significant changes in height, body weight, body fat %, fat mass, lean body mass, PACER laps, 10-RM chest press and leg press, paced curl-ups, and sit and reach on both the left and right sides. CONCLUSION: The 10-week weight management intervention was effective at producing favorable body composition and fitness changes in at-risk for overweight boys and girls.
