CORRELATES OF ETHNIC IDENTITY, FAMILY SUPPORT, AND ACADEMIC SELF CONCEPT IN ADOLESCENTS

Abstract Details

2007, Master of Science, Miami University, Family and Child Studies.
This study focuses on the relationships between ethnic identity, family support, and academic self-concept of adolescents in museum youth programs in the Midwest (N = 88). Three hypotheses were tested and all were supported. There is a correlation between family support and the commitment and exploration of an ethnic identity, commitment to an ethnic identity was associated with a higher academic self-concept, and there is a negative relationship between academic self-concept and self reported grade point average. When the family relationship was studied further, the correlation remained when maternal support was isolated with ethnic identity. A discussion of these findings is presented including limitations and implications for additional research and programming are addressed.
