Micro- and macro-reference frames: Specifying hierarchical spatial relations in memory

Greenauer, Nathan Michael

Abstract Details

2009, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Psychology.
A substantial amount of research has demonstrated the importance of reference frames in organizing memory of object locations in both small and large environments. However to date, little research has examined how the object locations represented in one reference frame are specified relative to object locations represented in another. In a series of four experiments, it is demonstrated that several micro-reference frames can be established in memory for sets of objects that are spatially and semantically distinct, and that the spatial relations between these micro-reference frames are specified in memory via a more global, macro-reference frame. Additionally, these experiments demonstrate that an established macro-reference frame can influence which of several micro-reference frames will be coded in memory, but that a previously established micro-reference frame had no apparent influence on the subsequent formation of a macro-reference frame. These results are interpreted as indicating a hierarchical coding of spatial relations, with spatial relations specified at both superordinate and subordinate levels in memory.
