Abstract Details

2006, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Agricultural Education.
The Bachelor of Agricultural Extension Education (BAEE) of Makerere University in Uganda, a unique adult educational program, aimed to promote the academic status of those field extension workers who worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries. Though the educational program has been in existence since 1997, little is known about the perceptions of field extension workers towards the various aspects of the BAEE educational program. This study, descriptive in nature, was undertaken to examine what these perceptions were and how they influenced the overall quality of the BAEE educational program. The study also explored how various sample characteristics influenced the perceptions of field extension workers. Field extension workers participating in the study had a mean age of 38, almost 70% were married and they had a vast experience in agriculture and other related fields. The unique nature of the participants therefore called for a unique teaching-learning environment to facilitate learning as well as to accommodate the learning challenges of the field extension workers. To do this effectively, the BAEE program curriculum included a diverse mix of agricultural related courses that imparted agricultural knowledge and skills that were required to work with the modern agricultural world. A diverse teaching methodology with active learning strategies was employed to accommodate the varying learning styles of adult learners. Coupled with good student-teacher relationships, an interactive classroom environment, participation in well-organized supervised enterprise projects, expected outcomes of the BAEE educational program and strategies to balance family and school in place, the BAEE educational program provided a conducive learning environment. However, sample characteristics including: gender; age; marital status; professional specialization; worksite allocation; and, field experience did not influence the several perceptions towards the aspects of the BAEE educational program. In one instance however, gender and age influenced the perceptions of field extension workers towards balancing school and family with more women than men, and older field extension workers more so than younger were affected. The overall quality of the BAEE educational program, on the other hand, was more influenced by those perceptions that were directed towards the practical applicability aspect and, the perceived classroom environment of the BAEE educational program.
