Some exceptional effects of aeration on corn bin wall stresses

Abstract Details

1981, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering.
The effects of aerating stored shelled corn with air of various temperatures, humidities and velocities, on the increases in hoop stresses of a storage structure, were studied with a 10:1 physical model. A mathematical model of the effects of rewetting of stored shelled corn by aerating with humid air was developed, and the results of a CSMP computer simulation were compared with the latoratory tests. The results indicated that aerating stored shelled corn with air of high humidities (greater than 95%) and temperatures between 10 degrees and 25 degrees Celcius tended to yield generally greater rates of increases in the tensile hoop stresses in the structure than using air of lower humidities, and higher temperatures. The results also showed that higher air velocities induced greater rates of build-up of the hoop stresses in the structure than did lower air velocities. These results provided a basis for predicting some exceptional stresses in corn storage structures due to various management practices and ambient weather conditions.
