AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EXTRINSIC FACTORS AFFECTING THE PULLOUT STRENGTH OF ALUMINUM ALLOY EXTRUSIONS

The current research consists of experiments on the pullout strength of the screw-slot extrusions to understand the factors affecting it. Four different kinds of extrusions from different companies were selected to perform the tests. Basic variables thought to affect was the length of the embedment of the screw in to the slot of the extrusion, type of aluminum, diameter of the slot, opening angle of the slot, diameter of the screw, pitch of the screw etc. Therefore enough tests were performed to get an exact idea how different factors affect the final pullout strength of an extrusion. After understanding of factors affecting on it, the intension was to provide with the final equation which takes all the affecting factors into account and give fair idea to estimate the strength of extrusion which may be helpful for future designs. Few of the test results have been furbished in the thesis work for the better understanding of the reader. One typical graph from each of the data points from each company are presented in this work. Few of the failure photographs are shown at the end to get an idea how it fails at different lengths of the embedment. Finally, the graph is presented which shows the pullout strength form the established equation versus the experimental results. It holds good match with the experimental results. Match between them proves the reliability of the established equation.
