Abstract
Predictive maintenance has gained wide acceptance as a cost cutting strategy in modern industry. Condition monitoring by lubricant analysis is one of the basic tools of a predictive maintenance program along with vibration monitoring, performance monitoring and thermography. Abnormal wear of the moving parts of machines can be avoided by detecting the presence of debris, in the lubricant oil, when they are in the microns size range. The objective of this project is to detect debris in SAE-30 motor oil using two different methods, namely, the Ultrasonic measurement and the Capacitance measurement methods. In the ultrasonic measurement method, the debris is detected as a measure of change in the energy of ultrasonic waves due to scattering by oil debris, in terms of voltage. And in the second or capacitance measurement method the debris is detected as a measure of change in the maximum reflection at resonant frequency of a series LC circuit due to presence of conducting debris, capacitor (C) having oil as dielectric. From the experimental results it was found that both the methods can detect the oil debris successfully and it was concluded that Capacitance method is better for detection of particles having lower range of size and Ultrasound method is better in the higher range.
