Dynamic soil properties influence the response of foundations and structures to seismic events, for example, earthquakes. Several test and analysis methods are available to estimate the dynamic soil properties as a function of depth. The estimated soil properties are required for design and analysis of structures. Seismic surface wave tests allow nondestructive methods to estimate soil properties down to a depth of about 100 m from sensor measurements of vibration on the surface of the earth. The test methods and analysis have improved over time, and array -based measurements and analysis have allowed better seismic parameter estimates. In seismic surface wave tests, one of the primary test measurements of interest is the Rayleigh surface wave velocity VR. Several algorithms have been proposed to estimate VR from vibration measurements, but comparisons of algorithm performance have not been thoroughly conducted. This thesis outlines theoretical modeling to assess both model and algorithm performance regarding seismic surface waves. Several finite element models are considered, with a recommendation of the best model for future analysis. Seismic velocity estimates from the models are compared with linear elastic theory.
