Abstract
Carbon nanotubes have attracted significant attention as novel one-dimensional nanomaterials due to their unique structures and properties. To explore and enhance their potential application in nanoscience and nanotechnology, carbon nanotubes are often used in conjunction with other materials, such as metals and their derivatives, including metal ions, metal nanocolloids, and organometallic materials, to form nanocomposites. Terpyridine-M(II) complexation has been largely used in supramolecular chemistry. A series of shape-persistent hexagon-like macrocycles were designed and prepared from their bis(terpyridine) building blocks. The 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopies were used to characterize all the intermediates and subsequent macrocycles. After constructing the nanoarchitectural carbon nanotubes composites and their hybrids with gold nanoparticles via DNA hybridization, the terpyridine-M(II) coordination technique was employed to build a reversible organometallic-carbon nanotube hybrids with multicomponent structures. A water-soluble terpyridine-Ru(II) hexamer was synthesized and attached on carbon nanotubes via electrostatic interaction, which was confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Recently, an end-to-end self-assembly of gold nanorods was built using a terpyridine-M(II) complex, as the connector.
