Abstract
This research study concerns the comparison of various polyp measurement methods for CT Colonography. Various studies in the past have shown the feasibility of accurately measuring polyps on two-dimensional and three-dimensional viewing modes. Other studies have shown the use of automatic computer-aided measurement methods for polyps. To date, polyp risk stratification is based on diameter measurements but many researchers believe that volume measurement is intuitively a better measure. This study compared different manual and automatic measurement methods with measurements reported by optical colonoscopy or pathology tests on a study cohort of 22 CT scans including a total of 25 polyps that are ≥ 6 mm in diameter. The measurements were performed on both prone and supine scans by a reader for each of the 25 polyps. The resulting sets of measurements from different methods were compared against each other to determine any significant differences. The study not only compared measurement methods for diameter measurements but also included comparison of polyp volume measurement methods. For diameter measurements, the study concluded that no statistically significant differences were found between the manual methods and reported measurements but computer-aided measurements were found to be different. For volumetric measurements, no statistically significant differences were found between the manual and computer-aided measurements.
