Reproductive Rights in Medical Dramas: A Feminist Analysis of Portrayals of Gender Roles on the Topic of Abortion on Television

Hungerford, Kristen A

Abstract Details

2010, Master of Arts, University of Akron, Communication.
Abortion has long been contested in the United States. This issue has been greatly debated in political, medical, ethical, and religious forums. In particular, American television has portrayed such positions pertaining to the issue of abortion. This thesis examines portrayals of women contemplating abortion. Specifically, depictions of gender roles were evaluated. Overall, these mediated messages convey the notion of abortion as wrong, immoral, and sacrilegious. Furthermore, women characters are portrayed as being subjected to the “expertise” of the “heroic” male physician characters; thereby further perpetuating patriarchal portrayals in American popular culture.
