The Synthesis of Nano-Sized Cobalt Particle Stabilized by Alkanethiol and the Characterization on the Surface

Abstract Details

2010, Master of Science, University of Akron, Chemical Engineering.

Nanosized cobalt particles prepared through a reverse microemulsion, introduced by Zhang, X. and Chan, K. [1], were modified by capping alkanethiol. The synthesis of ligands capped cobalt particle and the density calculation of ligands on the surface were firstly reported from this paper. The alkanethiol capped on the surface of cobalt particles prevented from them to coagulate each other by collision. The obtained reddish solution where cobalt particles stabilized showed two distinct UV-absorption peaks. The bondage between cobalt and ligand created new energy levels where free electrons could excite when UV-light was shined. The bondage also confirmed by the Co-S peak on SERS (Surface Enhancement Raman Spectra). The number of ligands bounded on the cobalt was determined by the chemical shift on NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). The density of ligands on each particle was calculated by TGA (Thermal gravitational analysis), AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) and NMR. Also, the bondage breakage was detected by the weight loss from TGA and increase heat flow from DSC.

The present work focused on assessing the usage of cobalt particles as a homogenous catalyst in the Fischer Tropsch process. To obtain single phase under the reaction condition, the proper feed ratio of CO, H2, and C6H14 (Hexane) was estimated by Peng-Robinson equation with Kij value.
