Abstract
The term "beat" refers to a musical style made popular by British and American bands of the sixties. The term "beat," however, has also been applied to a group of American poets and intellectuals, sometimes referred to as the "beatnicks," who strongly opposed and in many cases actively protested against the post-war American way of life. The fact that the same label has been used to identify both of these phenomena points to the existence of a cultural denominator. This connection would be corroborated by the facts that 1950's beatnicks were avid listeners of black music, from which beat music evolved, and that 1960's beat songs often featured such beatnick themes as pacifism and anti-consumerism. This study analyzes the exportation of these two Anglo-Saxon phenomena to Italy in the light of the findings of Italian beat scholars, and the memories of various artists, writers, musicians, activists, etc. who participated in and helped write the story of an all-Italian beat era.
