Mark Twain and Henry James: Different Americans, Similar Journeys

Heldenfels, Richard D.

Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, University of Akron, English-Literature.
Henry James and Mark Twain have often been treated as literary opposites. However, a close examination of their biographies and certain of their works indicates a closer kinship than has been indicated in most scholarship to date. In particular, James "Daisy Miller" appears to owe a noticeable debt to Twain's "The Innocents Abroad"; in addition, James's "The Bostonians," his attempt at a truly American novel, overlaps chronologically and thematically with Twain's "Huckleberry Finn," one of the great American novels. This thesis focuses especially on those two pairs of work but also examines the authors' similarities in larger contexts.
