Relationships Between the Nursing Practice Environment and Work Interference with Family Among Acute Care Nurses

Abstract Details

2011, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Akron, Nursing.
A current nurse staffing crisis is occurring in the United States while the demand for healthcare increases, so the ability to recruit and retain registered nurses is essential. The professional nursing practice environment has been touted as a means to accomplish this goal. However, little attention has focused on the interface between the work and family roles of the acute care nurse and how the nursing practice environment may be related to work interference with family (WIF). The purposes of this dissertation study were: to explore the relationships between the nursing practice environment and WIF among female acute care nurses and to determine if being married or having children at home moderated these relationships. This study was a secondary analysis from a larger study. The sample consisted of only direct-care female nurses (n = 964). Hierarchical regression was used. The nursing practice environment explained 18.4% of the variance in WIF, with autonomy, supervisor support and resources and staffing emerging as unique predictors. This study provides evidence that the nursing practice environment may be an important factor in decreasing the WIF among acute care nurses.
