Abstract
The current thesis presents the design and implementation of a power-efficient poly-phase decimation filter for Sigma-delta ADCs. A cascade of Cascaded-Integrator Comb (CIC) filter and Sharpened Cascaded-Integrator Comb (SCIC) filter is used as the decimation filter. This thesis further develops the idea of the two stage architecture by careful consideration of all the possibilities of implementing the two stage structure so as to achieve desired frequency characteristics with minimum power consumption. The architecture of the SCIC stage is slightly modified such that poly-phase decomposition can be easily applied. Therefore, both the CIC and SCIC stages are implemented in poly-phase form, which enables additional power consumption reduction. Various architectures for the poly-phase decomposition of the CIC and SCIC cascaded filter are considered and the architecture that consumes minimum power is chosen. The proposed architecture consumes a power of 1.05 mW and occupies an area of 0.11 mm
2
using CMOS 1µm technology. The proposed design shows the lowest power consumption among similar filter architecture with equivalent performance.
