Abstract
Both covalent and especially physical crosslinks can improve the mechanical properties of a material. Aliphatic fluorocarbons are highly immiscibile with aliphatic hydrocarbons, including when incorporated as linked alkoxy substitutents on liquid crystalline mesogens. This indicates that fluorocarbonhydrocarbon segments will also result in physical crosslinks in a material containing both types of segments. Atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) was recently developed as an approach to couple polymer chains with halogen end groups, such as the many halogen atoms found in hyperbranched polymers prepared by self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) of an inimer polymerized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The Pugh group recently developed the first hyperbranched polyacrylates prepared by homopolymerization of acrylate inimers, including inimers containing fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon segments. Based on these results, we hypothesize that it is possible to synthesize a doubly-crosslinked material using a hyperbranched polyacrylate prepared by SCVP of [2-bromo-2-(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,9-heptadecafluorononan-1- iv oxycarbonyl)]ethyl acrylate, followed by chemical crosslinking by ATRC through the many halogen atoms throughout the hyperbranched structure. We first optimized the polymerization conditions for our model, a non-fluorinated analog of the hyperbrached polymer, and then successfully crosslinked this hyperbrached polymer to an insoluble powder using ATRC conditions with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a reducing agent.
