Exfoliation of Transitional Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDS) and the Application of Co-Exfoliation of MoS2/Natural Graphite in Lithium Ion Battery (LIB)

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
Transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged to be one of the most promising materials for next-generation electronics due to their unusual electronic and photoeletronic properties. Wet chemistry exfoliation proves to be a practical method to exfoliate TMDs in large scale that is usually based on n-butyl lithium intercalation or long-time ultrasonication. Herein, we present a new method to carry out the exfoliation of TMDs in organic solvent, using Na/K alloy and sequentially 1-Iodoheptane, followed by low-power ultrasonication. Using this facile, two-step intercalation and exfoliation procedure, a few layers of TMDs (MoS2, WS2, MoSe2 and WSe2) were obtained and characterized by a series of techniques like XRD, TGA and TEM. Also, a facile co-exfoliation of MoS2/graphite was developed based on the same exfoliation condition. The MoS2/graphite hybrid after annealing was applied as the anode for lithium ion battery. This hybrid structure prevent the restacking of MoS2, increasing the accessible surface for lithiation and delithiation, and thus showed good performance as the anode. Although the specific capacity and rate capacity didn’t reach those values of similar state-of-art systems, the novel synthesis of such a hybrid nanocomposite offers a new route to obtain binary or even ternary composite that has synergetic effect on the enhancement of energy storage unit besides lithium ion battery.
