Controlling Radial Compositional Gradient in Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile/Silver Composite Fibers Using Chemical Solvent Vapor Treatment and Sintering Techique

Highly conductive PAN/silver micros-scale fibers with core-shell structure were successfully fabricated through an electrospinning-vapor treatment-sintering 3-step process. The effect of each step on the properties of the fibers, especially morphology, was carefully studied. PAN/AgNO3 fibers were firstly fabricated as precursor for PAN/Ag fibers through electrospinning. PAN/silver fibers with silver distribution ranging from uniform distribution to core-shell structure were obtained through in-situ formic acid vapor reduction of AgNO3 at different conditions. The development of the core-shell structure of PAN/silver fibers in relation to the solvent vapor treatment condition has been systematically investigated. High conductivity was achieved by sintering process. The effect of sintering process on the morphology and electric conductivity of vapor-treated PAN/silver was also studied.
