Optimization of Benzocyclobutene Containing Methacryalte Structure for Controlled Radical Polymerization

Abstract Details

2014, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
Synthesis of benzocyclobutene (BCB) containing methyl methacrylate was developed. The three new kinds of this methyl methacrylate have been made. Benzyne was generated from Benzenediazonium-2-carboxylate at 80¿1. In the meantime, the vinyl-substituted chemicals reacted with benzyne through the [2+2] cycloaddition reaction to generate the 1-substitued benzocyclobutenes. The 1-substitued benzocyclobutene alcohols were made though the hydrolyzation reaction or the reduction reaction. To achieve the longer chain alcohol, the 1-halo benzocyclobutene and 1-cyano benzocyclobutene was made and worked with repeating hydrolyzation and reduction reactions. The Grignard reactions of the brominated benzocyclobutenes were also investigated to attempt to generate the alcohol and carboxylate acid. Hydroxyl benzocyclobutene and Benzocyclobutyl methanol can be reacted with methacryloyl chloride by the esterification reaction to generate the monomers of benzocyclobutene containing methacrylate. These benzocyclobutene containing methacrylate were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The ratio of methyl methacrylate to the benzocyclobutene containing methacrylate was 5: 1. And the general condition of this ATRP was that under vacuum the degassed reagents were polymerized at 90 ¿ for 20 hours. The copolymers behaviors were required to investigate. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) trace shows that the PDI of the copolymers were as expected narrow which is from 1.60 to 1.55.
