Polyurethanes have served as a versatile family of materials in the field of biomaterials over the last several decades. Examples of polyurethane utilization in biomaterials include: catheters, cardiac prosthesis, tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery systems. The block segment nature of polyurethanes allows one to exchange components in the soft and hard segments to modulate the properties of the material for a variety of applications. Further, polyurethanes are more stable than polyesters, and polyether components such as poly(tetramethylene oxide) have been observed to be biostable in blood and tissue systems. In an effort to take advantage of this system a platform of polyurethane ABA block polyurethanes were synthesized using a family of diol monomers previously developed in the Joy laboratory. These diols contain pendant moieties that mimic those found in naturally occurring amino acids. In addition, these monomers were further explored as potential chain extenders for block poly ether-urethanes. The thermal and surface properties were analyzed for potential applications.
