Abstract
In recent years traffic agencies in many countries have developed an interest in obtaining a measure of quality of service for transportation facilities. The Highway Capacity Manual (HCM2010) describes specific techniques to evaluate the traffic handling ability of a transportation facility through measuring the Level of Service (LOS). It has also introduced the concept of Quality of Service (QOS) to assess the perceived performance of the transportation facility from the viewpoint of drivers and travelers. It is believed that both LOS and QOS are simultaneously useful to roadway operating agencies, members of the community, and decision makers. While there is no past work on roundabouts quality of service, this study tries to present and assess the QOS of urban roundabouts based on the drivers' perception, geometric characteristics and traffic flow conditions. A field origin destination data collection and driving survey in urban roundabouts are conducted with the aim of data collection on the degree of drivers’ satisfaction under various traffic flow conditions. The sample sizes were 119, 207, 293 and 316 respondents for mini, compact, single, and double-lane urban roundabouts respectively. The findings of this study show that the quality of service perception of urban roundabouts is influenced by several factors, including approach level of service, pavement quality, pavement marking, pedestrians’ activity, clarity of road signs, and presence of landscaping. Models are proposed for estimating drivers’ quality of service perception based on the survey results and traffic conditions.
