Structure-Property Relationship of "Peptide-like" Polyesters

Abstract Details

2015, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
Polyesters are wildly used materials in biomedical field such as drug delivery material, tissue engineering scaffolds material such as for bone regeneration and so on. However, because of complexity of internal environment, traditional polyesters like poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Polypropylene Fumarate (PPF), their properties are quite difficult to be easily tuned to accomplish specific application. Changing chemical structures is a method to modulate polymer properties. In Dr. Joy’s lab, a series of polyesters with “peptide-like” pendant functional groups was synthesized at room temperature via carbodiimide-mediated polymerization of pendant functionalized diols and diacid by Sachin Gokhale and Ying Xu. On this basis, polyesters with different types of pendant functionalized groups and diacids were synthesized, besides, hydrogen bonding was introduced into polymer side chains and the sequence of monomer addition was studied. Polymers were characterized with NMR, GPC, DSC, TGA, water contact angle water hydrolytic rate thus their physical properties can be understood and compared due to the change of structures. Besides, rheology tests and mechanical tests were carried out to further study the differences between various polymers. As biomaterial, cell compatibility of the synthesized polyester will be tested in the future to study whether the material is available in internal environment.
