Abstract
A quasi-two-dimensional mathematical model is developed to describe the damage evolution of corrosion through a coated plate due to a defect in the coating. The problem domain consists of a metal covered on one side with a coating, an electrolyte mix just outside the coating, and a small defect in the coating. The defect is a small stretch of the coating where the coating is more porous. In the model the defect length is 0.05 cm. The model uses a 1 cm x 1 cm plate with a coating thickness of 100 microns. To simulate the effects of corrosion over time partial differential equations for the concentration of water and oxygen in the coating and corrosion product zone are developed. An asymptotic analysis that uses the disparity in length scales between the coating thickness and the coating extent along the metal is used to simplify the two dimensional equations. The simplified model is solved numerically and tracks the concentration of water and oxygen in the coating and product zone as well as the corrosion damage that occurs. The model is investigated for different parameter variations including the rate of passive layer degradation, water and oxygen mass transfer rates, and defect area.
