Abstract Details

, Master of Science in Engineering, University of Akron, Electrical Engineering.
This work presents a water condition sensor for hydroponic plant growing applications. The proposed sensor can effectively measure pH level and electrical conductivity of the water solution using a single sensing electrode pair. This significantly reduces the complexity and the cost of conventional hydroponic water condition sensors that requires separate sensing electrodes for the pH level and electrical conductivity measurements. Furthermore, the sensor includes a micro controller that processes the raw sensor output data, and converts it into a readable format. This work also includes a remote monitoring system, using a Wi-Fi module, the sensor sends data wirelessly to a web server database which collects the data, stores it, and allows it to be displayed as needed using a personal computer or a smartphone. The prototype sensor was implemented, and basic operations were verified under an actual hydroponic plant growing environment.
