Synthesis Of Sequence-Specific Linear Giant Molecules Based On Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS)

Since De Gennes formally described the entities with distinct components in terms of both geometry and chemistry after the name of two-faced Roman God Janus, rapid development of researches on Janus Grains has been witnessed. Our group expanded the concept of Janus Grains to the molecular level, and synthesized “dumbbell-like” molecular Janus particles with precisely-defined chemical structures based on versatile nano building blocks, or so-called nanoatoms. POSS-based amphiphilic molecular Janus particles were reported to possess either three dimensional (3D) hierarchical structures or 2D ultra-thin nanocrystal structures, depending on particular conditions that were thoroughly discussed in our previous work. Furthermore, we need to explore a possible strategy to manipulate the thickness of those preceding 2D nanocrystals. In this context, we present the synthesis of a series of sequence-specific linear giant molecules constructed from distinct POSS derivatives which may satisfy our desire for tuning the thickness of 2D nanocrystals. And this series of sequence-specific linear giant molecules possess the sequence-controlled primary structure, which indicates a promising strategy to manipulate sequence-controlled macromolecules.
