Fitness of Firefighters as part of Administrative Practice

Hill, Michael L

Abstract Details

2016, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Akron, Public Administration.
Firefighters are charged with protecting their communities by providing a service that is both physically demanding and life threatening. An, unfit firefighter can place their coworkers in greater danger and endanger the safety of the public. Many departments do not require firefighters to maintain a basic level of physical fitness in order to remain on the job. Fire departments use Physical Performance Assessments to evaluate firefighters’ abilities to perform tasks related to fighting a fire to maintain their status and there have been no national standards adopted for a uniform minimum standard of physical fitness that includes a height and weight standard and test pf physical endurance to consider if a firefighter is fit for duty. This study surveys the Fire Chiefs of Ohio to consider the use and desirability of fitness standards in managing firefighters, as well as the adoption of a national physical fitness standard.
