Abstract
ABSTRACT The coatings are widely used to protect materials from corrosion and abrasion. Organic coatings have advantages of high toughness, flexibility and light weight. However they are suffered by low stability and relatively weak mechanical properties. On the other hand, inorganic coatings have better thermal stability, durability and hardness but lack of flexibility. Therefore, people use hybrid coatings to combine the advantages of the two. With the development of the chemistry, organic-inorganic hybrids can be obtained from sol-gel process. The organic part could be based on a diversity of resins, such as polyester, epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic and alkyds. The inorganic phase is obtained from silicon or metal alkoxides. The mechanical and anticorrosion properties of hybrid coatings have improved. For organic resins, it could provide the outstanding mechanical properties. And for inorganic part, it plays a role of corrosion inhibitor and adhesion promoter. Three sol-gel precursors were used to forming the inorganic network with the hybrid epoxy resins. In this thesis, two kinds of BPA epoxy hybrid coatings were prepared and characterized. In the formulation part, introducing three different sol-gel precursors enhanced the crosslink density and mechanical properties which is showed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and fracture toughness test. General coating properties are studied by coating test according to the ASTM methods. The excellent adhesion, mechanical and chemical resistance properties give the hybrid epoxy coating a wide use for many applications.
