Abstract
Some flower petal surfaces, such as rose petals, are known to be hydrophobic surfaces with a high static contact angle as well as high adhesion with respect to water drops. Here, we present a rose petal mimic surface via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which maintains similar wetting properties as this kind of rose petal surfaces. Based on the mechanism of hydrophobicity and adhesion characteristics, the artificial surfaces are fabricated by ethylene-co-methacrylic acid (EMAA) ionomer particles in a colloidal dispersion and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resultant surface presents hierarchical roughness on two different length scales and then forms hierarchical surface structure, which results in the hydrophobicity (for glass substrates, contact angle of 2 µL water droplet is ~140°) as well as good water pinning properties. As this surface is oleophilic and hydrophobic at the same time, it can be used for oil/water separations. In this research, we are trying to find the optimal conditions for EMAA dissolving in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and compare the performances of oil/water separations upon a series of LbL films prepared. The separation efficiency of free oil and water can achieve as high as 90% excluding the oil that the membranes can hold. This kind of PEI/EMAA multilayer membranes also show promising effects on oil/water emulsion separations.
