Nylons or polyamides (PA) are an important class of engineering thermoplastic due, in part, to their high notched Izod impact strength, which requires an effective dispersion of an elastomeric impact modifier throughout the PA matrix below a critical interparticle distance. There are several well studied methods used to achieve good dispersion most notably the use of a maleated elastomer, such as maleic anhydride grafted ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM-g-MA) which will bond to the amine end group of the PA. Another possible approach is to use an elastomeric ionomer to physically associate with the polar backbone of the PA. Past studies have indicated that zinc salts of sulfonated EPDM ionomer (Zn-S-EPDM) should perform well as an impact modifier for polyamides. This study confirms that EPDM-g-MA is a more effective impact modifier for polyamides than Zn-S-EPDM due to the smaller rubber particle sizes achieved. Clearly, the covalent bonding between the maleic anhydride of the EPDM-g-MA and amide group of the PA is more effective in distributing the EPDM in the matrix than the ionic bond between the zinc cation of the Zn-S-EPDM, and the amine or carboxyl groups of the PA. Furthermore, no evidence was found to support the idea that Zn-S-EPDM is a more effective impact modifier than neat EPDM at the same overall rubber concentration, nor was there any evidence of synergy between EPDM-g-MA and Zn-S-EPDM as expected. Apparently, the specific interactions between the ionomer and the polar backbone of the PA were not strong enough to effectively disperse the EPDM in the PA matrix, as expected.
