Using the Inventional System to Increase Inventional Capacity and Reduce Verbal Aggression: A Training Program and Evaluation

This study examined the relationship between training in aggressive communication using the Inventional System and trainees’ ability to generate arguments, increase argumentativeness, reduce verbal aggressiveness, and managing anger. Though previous studies have focused on increasing argumentativeness and reducing verbal aggressiveness, this study is the first to explore the role of anger and anger management. This study also examined the trainees’ perceived usefulness and effectiveness of the training program. Pre- and post- test data of trainees’ verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness supported previous research that training in these areas could increase one’s argumentativeness while reducing their tendency to engage in verbal aggression. Trainees’ perceptions of the training suggested that they were more comfortable presenting arguments after instruction on the Inventional System. Trainees also indicated that they felt training in argumentativeness, verbal aggression and anger management was useful and effective.
