Abstract
The self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules, which is a common phenomenon in nature, results in many different complex and ordered structure. Self-assembly of diblock copolymers in solution has been studied for years, typically, the micelle morphologies of a diblock copolymers changes with the selective polar solvent presenting spheres, cylinders, vesicles, even complicated bicontinuous structure, such as P-surface, D-surface and G-surface. Inspired by nature and the complexity of the fascinating architectures, we designed and synthesized a novel giant surfactant containing a well-defined hydrophilic hexaethylene glycol-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GPOSS) head and hydrophobic Polystyrene (PS) tail via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), Thiol-ene reaction and copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF-MS) applied to characterize the successful synthesis of GPOSS with the PS tail, Versatile morphologies (sphere, cylinder, toroid and 2D lamella) formed by adding different amount of water into 1,4-dioxane based giant surfactant solution have been determined via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic-force microscopy (AFM).
