Abstract
In geotechnical engineering, drilling fluid is used to aid the drilling of boreholes into the earth. Most drilling muds are thixotropic. This characteristic keeps the cuttings suspended when the mud is not flowing. [1] This presentation discusses an important additive, the viscosity modifier, in drilling fluids, Oligo(ß-alanine) end functionalized amorphous polypropylene. The oligo(ß-alanine) end-functionalized PP was synthesized via Alder-ene reaction, hydrogenation, and coupling of PP and oligo(ß-alanine). The oligo(ß-alanine) with different end groups (n-butyl and methyl) were all synthesized. Oligo(ß-alanine) is the key component to construct my viscosity modifier. Oligo(ß-alanine) have a strong propensity to form flat anti-parallel ß-sheets and the ß-sheets stack to form high aspect ratio fibrils. [2, 3, 4] The oligo(ß-alanine) in the end group of PP can form crystals through hydrogen bonding which showed the property of shear responsive viscosity changing. The oligo(ß-alanine) crystals also have relatively high melting point which exhibited the property of temperature independent viscosity. The oligo(ß-alanine) end-functionalized polypropylene can serve as the rheology modifier in drilling fluids, which is quite environment-friendly and inexpensive in price. Future work will focus on structural characterization of the viscosity modifier.
