Mechanical Properties of Supramolecular Nanocomposite Hydrogels Formed by Solution Assembly of Graphene Oxide with Polyelectrolytes

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Engineering.
The mechanical properties of graphene oxide (GO) and its abundant hydrophilic functional groups provide opportunities to generate composite hydrogels with advantageous mechanical properties over the conventional chemically cross-linked hydrogels. These GO-containing hydrogels could find applications in aqueous separations, energy storage, drug delivery and wound healing. One challenge with these hydrogels is the time-consuming chemical reactions and multiple step synthetic schemes as well as the difficulty in controlling the mechanical properties. In this work, a simple alternative route to generate a family of physical GO-hydrogels from aqueous solution based assembly of GO with polyelectrolytes has been developed. Assembly of polycationic poly(ethylenimine), PEI, with GO leads to hydrogels contain more than 99 % water and the rheological properties can be varied by the initial mixture composition of the aqueous GO and PEI. Upon compression, these hydrogels exhibit irreversible stiffening that can increase the storage modulus as determined from shear rheology by more than 3 orders of magnitude. This stiffening behavior is generalizable to other anionic 2D materials, such as clay nanosheets (cloisite), and suggests that the mechanical properties are driven by jamming of the 2D sheets, which is consistent with the signature of the Payne Effect in these hydrogels. The tensile properties of these binary composites hydrogels are poor (brittle), but can be enhanced by co-assembly with poly (acrylic acid), PAA. This produces a less swollen but more stretchable, critical gel-like complex. At intermediate concentrations of PAA, both the elastic modulus and maximum extensibility are significantly increased. These studies provide insight into electrostatic assemblies of 2D materials with polyelectrolytes.
