Abstract
A section of a Massillon steel joist and a section of a Truscon steel joist were donated to the engineering department at The University of Akron for research purposes by George Wagner, who is a former engineer with Macomber Steel and a current Macomber historian. Both joists were salvaged in 2010 from buildings that were built in 1939 or earlier in Massillon, Ohio. Over the years, Massillon and Truscon steel joists were installed throughout the world for the supporting of floors, roofs and other structural applications. Confirming the structural integrity of these structural members can reinforce the assumption that they can be continued to be in use without safety concerns. Tensile testing was performed on the top chord, bottom chord, and web sections of the joists to determine the material properties of each joist. Abaqus 6.11 was utilized to model different lengths of the Massillon and Truscon joists to determine the loadings needed to initiate yielding and the ultimate stress on the Massillon and Truscon joists. The safety factor of the joists were found by comparing the loadings needed to initiate yield stress by the recommended loadings from the manufacturer loading tables of each joist.
