Temperature Dependence of Fluorescence Spectra in Some Common Polymers

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Science, University of Akron, Physics.
Fluorescence, the emission of photons with longer wavelengths, is one of the fascinating phenomena occurring in nature. Its study has major impact on knowing the structural and dynamic properties of matter. In this thesis, the fluorescence emission spectra of some common polymers are measured at a different temperature. The measurements are done at 77 K, 100 K, 150 K, 200 K, 250 K and 300 K. The fluorescence quantum yield decreased as the cryogenic temperature of the polymer sample is increased. An effort is made to study how the temperature affects the fluorescence measurements in polymer samples. The fitting parameter values obtained from the fitted curves of the emission spectra is used to analyze temperature dependency. The results show the effect of temperature on the intensity of the fluorescence peak and there is no spectral shift observed in the emission spectra except for Polystyrene (PS). The effect of temperature in fluorescence intensity is visible because at a higher temperature, the non-radiative processes is dominant than radiative processes.
