GIANT LIPIDS BASED ON POLYHEDRAL OLIGOMERIC SILSESQUIOXANE AND POLYSTYRENE: THE SELF-ASSEMBLY IN THE MELT

Giant lipids based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nano-particles and polystyrene (PS) chains have the architectural feature that one nano-particle is tethered with two polymer chains at one junction point. Depending on the hydrophilic POSS particle used, two series of samples with different molecular weights are synthesized: (1) POSS with seven carboxylic acid groups (APOSS-2PS) and (2) POSS with fourteen hydroxyl groups (DPOSS-2PS). They self-assemble into ordered structures depending on compositions, i.e., lamellar, hexagonal, and bcc phases, which are fully characterized by small angle x-ray scattering and transmission electron microscope. The information about the interfacial thickness, the exclusion zone of the free ends, and the packing model is extracted from the data. The stability of the bcc spheres is examined from the polystyrene chain length, and it is found that a non-radial end-to-end vector is preferred. The phase diagram of giant lipids is more consistent with linear diblock copolymers than the Y-shape ones, which suggests that the rigidity of the nano-particle balances the architectural asymmetry. The domain spacing is related to the diameter of the nanoparticle and the unperturbed end-to-end distance of the polystyrene chain: the smaller domain spacing is preferred for the samples containing smaller APOSS and the shorter polystyrene chain length.
