ESTIMATING THE IMPACT OF NEED FULFILLMENT ON HUMAN MOTIVATION ACCORDING TO MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Science, University of Akron, Computer Engineering.
Health care costs account for a significant portion of the nation's GDP. The current reactive approach to medical practice must be transformed into a proactive approach that empowers individuals to manage their own personal wellness. It is well-known that the nutrition and exercise behaviors of individuals affect their wellness; these behaviors are directly influenced by their underlying motivation. By modeling the factors that affect the behaviors of individuals, it is possible to design novel interventions to improve their wellness. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a well-established theory that addresses how needs fulfillment affects the motivation of an individual. This thesis presents a Bond Graph model that was designed and validated to operationalize Maslow's theory. Bond Graph have been reported in the literature to model and reason about human behavior. This thesis presents the first Bond Graph model for Maslow's hierarchy. The model represents the hierarchical structure for the fulfillment of needs and how it impacts motivation to perform physical activity. Parameters of the model were computed using system identification based on responses to a questionnaire was designed to secure input from a population of participants. The estimates obtained using the model were reasonably accurate and demonstrated a strong correlation with prepotency in Maslow's hierarchy. In the future, more accurate estimates can be obtained for the parameters by collecting a larger sample of input-output data from the participants.
