Acoustic noise mitigation of switched reluctance machines through skewing methods

Abstract Details

, Master of Science in Engineering, University of Akron, Electrical Engineering.
High acoustic noise has been one of the drawbacks that limit the widespread use of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) in many applications. Skewing methods are considered as both simple to implement and very effective in reducing the noise level compared with other available design methods. The goal of this thesis is to reduce the level of the acoustic noise that emerges from SRMs through skewing methods. The skewing can be implemented in the stator stack, the rotor stack, or in both. Electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) is used to compare the different skewing methods with the conventional SRM regarding the motor efficiency and the radial force variation at the same operating conditions. The results obtained show that skewing both stator and rotor laminations provides the best reduction of the acoustic noise levels. Multi-physics FEA, which includes electromagnetic, mechanical and acoustic simulations, were performed to verify the effectiveness of the aforementioned methods in reducing the acoustic noise level. The optimum skewing angle that results in the minimum noise level is selected for implementation to validate the simulation results. Skewed and conventional machines with the same dimensions were built and tested experimentally. The skewed SRM successfully reduced the peak noise level by 13 dB compared with the conventional SRM. Also, it was verified that there was a good correlation between the simulation and experimental results.
