Controllable Methylation of Polyethyleneimine by Cu Coordination for NOX, SO2, and CO2 Capture

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Science, University of Akron, Polymer Science.
Partially methylated polyethyleneimine (PEI) by Cu coordination was developed for the NOX, SO2, CO2 capture in this study. PEI, which consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, was coordinated with Cu for the partial protection of amine groups from methylation. After the methylation process, potassium hydroxide (KOH) was used to extract Cu from the methylated mixture in order to obtain the partially methylated PEI. The investigation of the effect of Cu on the methylation of primary and secondary amines into tertiary amines and the adsorption/desorption pathways of NOX, SO2, CO2 have been studied by in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Meanwhile, mass spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) were used to confirm the partial methylation of PEI and Cu distribution, respectively. It was found that Cu can serve as a protective agent to coordinate with PEI during the methylation process. CO2 can completely desorb from partially methylated PEI sorbent while SO2 can partially desorb from partially methylated PEI sorbent after temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), resulting from the remaining of un-methylated primary/secondary amines on partially methylated PEI. On the other hand, it was difficult for NOX to desorb from the partially methylated PEI sorbent. By adjusting the ratio of primary/secondary amine to tertiary amine, the binding energy between acidic gases and PEI could be fine-tuned.
