England, Stonehenge, and the Druids: The Role of William Stukeley in the Beginnings of Archaeology and the Rise of British Nationalism

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, University of Akron, History.
This thesis looks at the effect that the prominent 18th century antiquarian William Stukeley had on the development of nationalism in England through his approach to and application of early archaeological methods. The majority of the primary sources used for this research are from the early modern period, which includes the works of Stukeley, William Camden, John Leland, and John Milton, among other antiquarians and historians. The thesis traces the changing discipline of antiquarianism from the early modern into the modern period. In the 17th century, antiquarians focused on the cosmopolitan influences of the culturally powerful French and Italian academics as well as relatively modern religious, legal, and territorial trends within England. This left the influence of England trailing behind the international reputations of France and Italy along with other European powers. Stukeley’s intent was to shift the focus of antiquarian research to the discoverable history of England and attempt to entice English intellectuals to study their own country. As later antiquarians demonstrate, Stukeley’s work was influential in that it leads to a growing focus on English origins and shaped the foundation of understanding of British history that nationalism built upon.
