Lap-shear test: from “Kendall’s steady peeling” to “catastrophic failure”

In the peeling experiment, Kendall had built a model to explain the energy distribution when the peel force reaches a plateau and in this steady state region, it will keep peeling at a constant rate until the cracks arrive at the end. In the last five years, some studies have proposed a new scaling law for adhesion for lap-shear test. In this shear model, it is predicted force should increase with displacement until the entire tape detach abruptly, which is called catastrophic failure. Bico and coworkers considered the stress decay length as the reason for catastrophic failure. Then, Dillard and coworkers combined these two models and proposed that if the length adhered to the substrate is smaller than the critical length, it is catastrophic failure, or else, it is Kendall’s steady peeling. The stress decay length is predicted to be of the order of the thickness of the sample. But, in Crosby and coworkers’ experiments, the length of the samples is much larger than the stress decay length. So, we propose that the stress decay length may not be the main reason for catastrophic failure. We propose that catastrophic failure occurs when the crack propagation is very fast, and we used some commercial tapes to conduct the lap-shear test on different substrates. We find that there are two different regions in the peeling process on Teflon and the crack propagation rate can be controlled by compliance of the tape and the surface energy of the substrate.
