Abstract
There is considerable evidence that demonstrates that interpersonal trauma is a risk factor for disordered eating. A growing body of literature has sought to ascertain the mechanisms that explain the trauma ¿ disordered eating relationship; however, it has been conducted in a largely atheoretical manner. Other limitations include employing too narrow an approach when examining both trauma (i.e., often exclusively childhood sexual abuse) and disordered eating (i.e., only bulimia symptoms). The current study addressed this gap in the literature by exploring potential mechanisms that may explain the trauma ¿ disordered eating relationship informed both by the model of psychological adaptation (McCann, Sakheim, & Abrahamson, 1988), and sociocultural theories (i.e., Tripartite Influence Model, dual-pathway model of bulimic pathology). Specifically, it was hypothesized that the relationship between trauma and disordered eating would be serially mediated by maladaptive schemas in five core areas (i.e., safety, trust, power/control, esteem, intimacy) and psychological consequences (i.e., PTSD symptoms, ineffectiveness, interpersonal problems, affective problems, overcontrol). Additionally, it was predicted that the relationship between each of the psychological consequences and disordered eating would be moderated by thin-ideal internalization. Participants were 341 undergraduate women. Path analysis demonstrated support for the hypothesized mediation but not for any of the proposed moderations. Implications are discussed.
