EFFECTS OF POROSITY AND TEMPERATURE ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HOLEY GRAPHENE SHEETS

Graphene is one of the most promising new materials for signi cant advancement in electronics, sensing, and energy storage technologies. However producing large quantities of graphene has been a major obstacle towards making graphene based devices practical. A new derivative of graphene known as holey graphene, which is just graphene with nanometer sized holes distributed on it, is much simpler to produce in large quantities and also has many advantages over pristine graphene. In this work we use MD simulations to create periodic holey graphene sheets with holes of varying geometry and size and measure the Young's modulus over a range of temperatures from 100-1000 K. The Young's modulus is determined by applying a uni-axial strain along the armchair and zigzag directions of the graphene lattice and calculating the resulting average stress. For both the armchair and zigzag directions strain was applied in increments of 0.1% out to a maximum strain of 1%. The Young's modulus as a function of density was used to identify the scaling coefficients for different hole geometries.
